MUSIC

This year we will be presenting a full summer of local music highlighting artists from around the city with a focus on the core, as we stream and share live music from the drop ins, front porches and basements of emerging and professional musicians from all sorts of genres! We will also include four live streams hosted by the Get Away Gigs!

Saturday June 6 - 12pm

Donna Durand

In celebration of seniors week, we'll be kicking off the festival with a live stream from singer/songwriter Donna Durand singing a song written by poet Adele Fontaine. Donna grew up listening to songs played on country and western radio at her grandparents home in the hamlet Bawlf, Alberta, Canada. Then, choir music and in her late teens, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. The first songwriter Donna was aware of is her mom.  She would sit at the piano and cook up funny little songs such as Gasoline Cowboy.  Donna has formal education in musical theatre and recreation therapy.  Check her website for a full bio.

June 20 - 2:30 pm – 3:45 pm

Dempsey Bolton

As a kid, Dempsey grew up listening to the soulful likes Otis Redding and Stevie Wonder while also taking interest in other areas of expression. Art that attracted his attention was often dark and tragic such as the works of painter Mark Rothko or dystopian writer Philip K. Dick. While in school, he started producing demo tracks in his home studio inspired by artists who seamlessly fused R&B with other genres; artists like Jack Garratt, James Vickery and R.LUM.R. While getting his degree in Astrophysics at the University of Alberta Dempsey found himself longing more and more to pursue music. After finishing this degree and despite having a Master's program lined up, he decided to followed his passion and work on his art full-time. While becoming skilled in production, piano and already having played guitar for years, Dempsey put all his knowledge to use in creating his debut album "Monochrome" with the help of his friend and producer Trey Mills.

Dempsey has found success with his first 4 releases in the form of multiple Spotify editorial playlists and large blog placements such as SoulBounce, The Hype Magazine and Acid Stag. His next single “Savour” is a self-produced labour of love that came to life over the course of 2 months in his bedroom studio.
